Here's a DIY guide to interior painting step by step procedures:

Preparation is important

1. ​"Clear the room" - remove furniture, rugs and anything else that would be in the way of your project.
2. "Patch & Repair" - fill in cracks, imperfections and holes using patching compound or spackle. Let dry and sand smooth.
3. "Clean the surfaces" - wash the walls, baseboard and ceilings  with a mild detergent and water. This will remove grime, grease and dust. Let dry completely.
4. "Tape & Cover" - using painters tape to protect areas you don't want painted. Examples include, but not limited to, trim, windows and doors. Then cover floors and furniture with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect those items.

Painting Process

1. "Prime the surface"​ - Apply a primer to bare surfaces, especially if you are changing colors of the walls. Primer helps paint to adhere to the surface in an even distribution.
2. "Select the correct paint" - High-quality eggshell paint will ensure durability, color and sheen. Latex paint is recommended for walls and trim. It dries easily and wipes well.
3. "Spread the first coat" - It is recommended that you use a high-quality roller and paint brush. Use the roller for the walls and paint brush for the corners, trim and edging. Using an "W" or "M" motions, overlapping slightly. Apply an even coat, making it smooth. 
4. "The paint will dry thoroughly with time" - The first coat needs to dry completely before applying the second coat. Drying time fluctuates based on paint type, humidity and temperature of the room.
5. "Spread the second coat" - Make sure to apply the second coat just like the first coat, nice and smooth.
6. "Remove Tape" - Remove all taping before it dries to ensure that a small part of the paint won't rip off the walls. Once it's completely dry remove the coverings. ​

1. "Clean up" - After house painting, immediately clean brushes and rollers and trays with paint thinner or water.
